A 10-Minute Morning Mobility Routine for Stiff Joints

By the Ancestral Vigor team · Updated October 13, 2026

Feeling stiff when you get out of bed is common, especially after 40. A short, gentle routine can help you feel looser and ready for the day. This one takes ten minutes and needs only a bit of floor space.

Before you start

Move slowly and stay in a comfortable range. Mobility work should feel easy, never painful. If you have an injury or a joint condition, ask your doctor or physiotherapist which movements suit you.

The routine

Do each movement for about one minute, breathing slowly:

  • Neck circles: slow half circles, side to side
  • Shoulder rolls: forwards, then backwards
  • Cat and cow: on hands and knees, round then gently arch the back
  • Hip circles: standing, hands on hips
  • Hip flexor stretch: half kneel, gently shift forward
  • Hamstring sweep: heel forward, hinge at the hips, sweep the arms
  • Ankle rocks: knee over toes, then back
  • Standing side reach: alternate sides
  • Sit to stand from a chair, slow and controlled
  • Finish with ten slow breaths standing tall

How to make it stick

Attach it to something you already do, like the kettle boiling or right after brushing your teeth. Ten minutes most days beats an hour once a week.

Common questions

Is mobility the same as stretching?

Not quite. Stretching holds a position. Mobility moves your joints through their range, which many people find easier first thing in the morning.

Should I do it every day?

Most people can. Keep it gentle, and skip anything that causes pain.
