A 4-Week Walking Plan for Beginners
By the Ancestral Vigor team · Updated October 13, 2026
Walking is one of the easiest ways to move more. It is free, you can do it almost anywhere, and it is simple to build up. This four-week plan starts small so it fits into a real week.
The plan
Walk at a pace where you can talk but not sing. Aim for five days a week:
- Week 1: 10 minutes a day
- Week 2: 15 minutes a day
- Week 3: 20 minutes a day, one walk a little brisker
- Week 4: 25 to 30 minutes a day, two brisker walks
Make it easier to go
Lay out your shoes the night before. Pick a set time, like after breakfast or after work. Walk with a friend or a podcast. On busy days, two 10-minute walks count just as much.
What to wear
Comfortable, supportive shoes matter more than anything else. Dress in layers and carry water on longer walks.
After week four
Keep the daily habit, add a hill or a longer weekend walk, and track your walks so you can see the streak grow.
Common questions
How fast should I walk?
Brisk enough that you breathe a bit harder but can still talk in full sentences.
Is walking enough exercise?
Walking is a great base. Many people also add two short strength sessions a week.
